In designing process plants engineers must consider the vast array of possibilities for feedstock, chemistries, process options, and much more to reach the optimal solution. Simulation is a critical step in understanding how a process will work and how it can be made better.
The example used is based on the SRI International Process Economics Program report, “Vinyl Chloride Supplement C” (December 1982), section 8, which covers vinyl chloride (VCM) from ethylene dichloride (EDC) by pyrolysis.
